Meet the Woochibies

PokeyLet me introduce you to the Woochibies, named after the Taoist and Chinese state of Wuji…the place of complete nothingness, before the existence of duality of light and dark, up and down, cold and hot, love and indifference.  This state of nothingness is the springboard for everything; it’s pure potential, divine creation and possibilities. This is where the Woochibies were conceived. This is where they were born.

The Woochibies are a group of seven sculptures that I originally intended as ceramic garden art, but after the first one, Pokey, was created, they changed to be characters in children’s books that I was going to write.  The books are on hold now, but the characters are as vibrant as ever, enjoying being loved just as they are.  Let’s meet them one by one.

Pokey, slow moving, munching along the way, takes it all in, but she sometimes misses implications and nuances.  It appears that she doesn’t quite get it.  Sporting a rose on her back, Pokey is a mix of a bunny, rose bush, piglet and an exotic fish.  Maybe she seems a bit slow because shePokey Back View perceives the deeper meaning.  She is intuitive and feels no need to question her understanding to please others.  Round, bulbous, flowing and calm, Pokey was the first.  Pokey and Spike were the original duo in my mind, female and male, grounding the other characters, but Spike didn’t present himself until all of the others were created.

The next Woochibie to come through was Chester.  I’ll tell you about him in my next blog.

I love Pokey! I can’t wait to meet the rest and then learn of their adventures. I am always amazed at how an artist can find and feel the feelings and make it visible for others. You amaze me and inspire me. 🙂
