How Does Healthy Eating Taste?

IMG_8773Author, food activist and journalist, Michael Pollan, wrote nine books on healthy, conscious eating. His latest book explores a deeper and more meaningful connection to the ingredients and cooking techniques that we use to nourish ourselves.

Michael recommends that we cook more at home because we tend to add less salt, sugar and fat than prepared foods contain. He urges us to ask the question of all food on our plates “Where did this come from?” Whether we choose to be vegetarian or carnivores, gluten-free or paleo advocates, we need to be aware of what we are eating and how we prepare our food.

I decided to try out his ideas for food preparation tonight. After steaming organic vegetables, adding chick peas, pasta, grated cheese and fresh tomato sauce, I was about to snuggle up on the couch with my dinner and watch two episodes of Downton Abbey that I missed.

Then I wondered what would Michael say about that. This lovingly prepared meal seemed to require a different atmosphere. Instead of curling up on the couch, I set a place at the table with dimmed lights and classical piano music in the background ready to enjoy the food that I so lovingly prepared for myself. I think that it worked. I felt healthy and nourished, appreciative of my attention to my well-being. Now to Downtown Abbey!
