GMO or Non?

Although there is much talk about consuming GMO versus non-GMO foods, many people do not understand exactly what it is or how it affects our bodies. I did some research to clarify the issues and would like to pass that information onto you.

Genetically Modified Organisms or (GMOs) are organisms that have been altered for reasons unrelated to health or nourishment using genetic engineering techniques to create a new organism. Using DNA technology, the molecules are combined to create a set of genes, and then the altered DNA is transferred into the food to give it new genes. Created in a laboratory, these novel organisms have alarmed scientists and consumer and environmental groups who in turn are alerting consumers about the potential risks to our food supply.

According to the Institute for Responsible Technology, animal studies indicate health risks with GMOs, including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. A 2009 study found that GMOs may contribute to weight gain and organ failure in rats, with most of the negative effects centered in the kidneys and liver. Monsanto has infused Roundup in some of their GMOs. Today, nearly 50 countries including Australia, Japan and all of the countries in the European Union have restrictions or bans on the production and sale of GMOs.

While this is a cursory review, I hope that there is enough information for you to make an informed decision or do further research on your own. I, for one, am going to do everything in my power to avoid genetically modified (also called bioengineered) foods whenever possible.
