The Question is Are You Having Fun?

photo(23)I woke up in the middle of the night saying these words over and over again in my mind: The question is Are You Having Fun?  In those foggy moments between sleep and being awake often comes intuition that is worth listening to.

I think of all the people I have come across who are working so hard to contribute and build a meaningful life for themselves and their families…young parents, talented healers, brilliant scientists, energetic entrepreneurs, creative artists and those words loom in my mind: The question is Are You Having Fun?  Whether we are raising children or taking care of aging parents or building a business or delivering food to people in need, the quality with which we do it matters.

Having fun is not frivolous or selfish or relegated to the realm of children.  It is ours for the taking and it heals those around us.  Do you feel good being near someone who diminishes himself to carry the sorrows of the world in his heart?  Not me.  When I am around someone who is confident enough to have fun I feel uplifted and encouraged, lighter and flowing, and I want to be around him more.  It doesn’t take away from anyone else.  It’s okay, it’s really okay to have fun.
