Today I started the process of turning in my New York license plates for New Mexico ones. It is one more step in establishing residency here. I can no longer think of myself as a New Yorker who is visiting Santa Fe. I must confess that I’ve really enjoyed being the only New York car I’ve seen here. And, with the added distinction of an awesome plate connoting free spirit, I’ve been feeling like I stand out from the crowd.
I thought that people would stop me on the streets and comment on my adventure that brought me so far from home. People in NY commented with awe at the plates. The reality is that very few people here noticed. I guess that there are so many free spirits that the concept is not a novelty. Ho-hum! So what? Another person who dances to her own music? Not much cause to be shocked.
Oh well. I can give it up. Even though my car will not advertise who I am, I will always be a free spirit!
