The Jewel of the Himalayas

The kingdom of Bhutan is a tiny country landlocked between China and India. Lush forests contrast with monasteries tucked into the jagged flank of the Himalayas. One hundred percent organic (chemical fertilizers are banned throughout the whole country), marijuana grows wild, no homelessness, most houses powered by solar power, killing a tiger results in life imprisonment, Bhutan measures its Gross National Happiness in terms of contentedness of its citizens. The king has been known to go door to door asking people what they need. Sound extraordinary? I think that it is.

I recently heard a lecture by a woman who went to Bhutan and had the good fortune of meeting with the king.

As she humbly stood in front of him, he addressed her mission to his land. “Do you want to know how to be happy?” he asked her.

“Yes!” she answered, anxious to hear the culmination of his years of study and service.

“It’s easy. Smile.”

And, this is true.

That was supposed to be emoji smiles. Lol. Laughter at silly mistakes brings smiles and happinesses. šŸ™‚
