What I like about Santa Fe is that it is not adversarial. The pervasive attitude seems to be one of being helpful. In the three months that I have been here, I have heard a car horn twice, and one of those times was me warning a car that was about to back into mine in a parking lot. Actually, there was a third time today when I was blocking two-way traffic at Whole Foods while waiting for a parking spot. I’d better get NM plates soon before people get to know my car!
There is another major draw for me. It is not that it is new-agey and full of organic food stores because California has the market cornered in those areas. It is that the people are quirky. I like that my waitress has blue hair, and that some people have whole body tattoos. I like that teenagers might wear their pajamas in town on cold days and ladies older than me wear ruffled skirts and cowboy hats. I even saw a girl walking her pet pig across the street on a leash. What a scattered landscape, robust and creative, gutsy and unique! Ya never know what you are going to find on the streets of town, and I’m game for it all!
