If you put a spatula in the hands of a disturbed person, he can do little harm. But if he has a semi-automatic weapon, he can cause heartbreaking devastation. Stop saying that guns don’t kill, people do. It is not one of these alone that causes such a tragedy, it is the combination of both, and we have to address both.
The original purpose of the second amendment was not to give us an inalienable right to attack. Sir William Blackstone described the right to keep and bear arms as an auxiliary right, supporting the natural rights of self-defense, resistance to oppression, and the civic duty to act in concert in defense of the state.
The major purpose of a semi-automatic is to attack. Look at what is happening. Stop citing the small possibility that a person will need this weapon to protect himself and his family. The likelihood is that he will use it to carry out a personal vendetta causing unimaginable damage.
BAN SEMI-AUTOMATIC WEAPONS NOW! Make it illegal to sell or purchase them, no add-ons, no qualifications, no more discussion! Who is insane, the person causing such mass destruction or us, the ones who continue to allow it?
This will only happen when the constituents of the Republicans who have blocked sensible gun control (pretty much all of them) vote out those whose votes are totally controlled by NRA contributions. And when those constituents make it clear that they will only vote for candidates who swear that they will support those measures. Integrity and concern for the commonweal have been eclipsed by the desire for re-election and campaign contributions.
