Have You Heard of Amma?

Have you ever heard of Amma, meaning mother? She is a woman from India who has dedicated her life to alleviating the pain of those living in poverty as well as those suffering physically and emotionally. What is her technique? She hugs. Over the thirty years of her world tours, Amma has embraced more than 34 million people. If necessary she will hug attendees one at a time throughout the night. She says that she gets her energy from love.

I first heard of Amma and her global charity Embracing the World  years ago, but was never motivated to be in her presence. What’s the big deal, I wondered? That was then. It is different now. On Monday my friend and I went to a huge venue to attend our first Amma event. We were told to be patient about waiting in line. We would receive our hugs, no matter how long it took. Wearing white to represent coming before her in purity of spirit, I took my place in line.

Inching closer and closer, I started to feel excited. When there was one person before me, I was told to kneel so I would be in the proper place to be hugged. Then it was my turn. Her embrace was firm and her neck smelled of roses. Her plentiful frame was comforting – a cozy place to rest my head. She chanted a deep, guttural vibration and held me close moving my head first to the left and then to the right. She held me tight for about ten seconds, her deep chants piercing my body and then just as firmly let me go.  Her attendants guided me to the side of the stage.

I moved to one of the chairs on the stage where others who were just embraced sat to integrate their feelings. To my shock, I felt like a jolt of electricity had just passed through me. All channels were open and my energy was flowing freely.

That’s when I realized that she does more than go around the world hugging people. She travels the world healing one person at a time. Her embrace is healing, opening, therapeutic. It is true that love heals and her highest vibration of love offered selflessly is powerful medicine.
