Hat Trick

photoThird try to get to Santa Fe. It seemed like everything was going smoothly. I was happy to have an extra day to rest and regroup, and to rethink how I packed. I had packed like I was going on Noah’s Ark…two of everything. I added a few things and took out more, wondering what people wear in that part of the country.

I arrived at the airport early. Pulling up to departing curb, I got a text message that the plane was delayed. What? That would give me five minutes to change planes in Dallas. Impossible, of course. I waited in line for one hour to talk to a representative. When it was my turn I suggested trying to make an earlier flight which would allow the connection, but only give me twenty minutes to get a ticket, go through security and get to the gate.

I noticed that the agent was having a stressful day. I offered a compassionate comment, and he went out of his way to accommodate me. He called in a favor from his friend in baggage to put a “Hot” tag on my bag that would rush it through. He told me to grab my carry on and run. I ran to security, stopping short of knocking over an old lady. Be nice, I told myself, one day that will be me.

While in security I heard my name over the loudspeaker. “Passenger Dolgin, proceed to Gate Six immediately. The plane is boarding.” Running down the lane, passing Starbucks and newsstands, weaving in and out of strollers and trams, I made my way to the gate. Jumping onto the plane, I was the last person to board. After the wheels left the ground, I fell into a deep sleep, waking up only to wipe drool off my lips.

I arrived in Dallas with an hour to spare for lunch. After a pecan chicken salad, I made my way to the gate. Now, Santa Fe is a tiny airport, requiring small planes. Our plane was so small that when I looked out the window I couldn’t find it. Not a good sign.

Flying over spectacular mountains and into a raspberry sherbet sunset we landed in Santa Fe. I made a friend on the plane and breathed fresh mountain air when I stepped out. I do believe that I have arrived!
