Freedom for Socks

IMG_9124 As promised, I addressed my sock drawer tonight.  It is astounding how many socks are too small, tattered and ridiculously out of character for me now.  Either they really shrink or my children have been storing their socks in my drawer for years.  Are those white anklets my mother’s?  And I don’t remember buying one pair of gray socks with beige toes let alone two that are buried under a pile.

I applied the same principle that Marie suggests for all clothes, pick up the item and ask “Does this spark joy?”  I picked up a taupe green sock and said that it would spark joy if I could find the other one.  A pink and gray tube sock with mauve flowers would spark joy if I worked in the circus.  It feels like my sock drawer has been a clearing house for stragglers and misfits, not a place to rest for items that work hard during the day, trapped between my foot and shoe enduring pressure and friction to protect my precious feet, as Marie says they do.

After a grueling two hours, neatly folded piles of socks will make their way to a new home, and my sock drawer feels calm, free and a space where all who have kept me warm can relax and breathe.  Ahhhh!  I do feel better.  I’ll take a look at jeans and pants next.

Share!  Share!  Share, please!  Are you inspired to tidy up?
