Free and Clear

IMG_1593I gave away my sculpture stand. I gave away anatomy books dotted with my fingerprints in clay, the pages so worn that they were no longer attached to the binding. I gave to my artist friend armature wire that supports a sculpture like its skeleton. She was thrilled to receive them. New to her; old to me.

Every object has a memory linked to it. I don’t want to carry those attachments moving forward. I don’t want anything to weigh me down by the sheer memory of what it meant in the past. I don’t want to use anything as a permission slip for me to experience the present and future in pure freedom. I want to move forward with openness and expectation, hope and joy.

It takes courage to release possessions. Sometimes they feel like an extension of ourselves. But, to me, they are not. They are expendable, replaceable and, like our cells, get sloughed off so new ones will grow in their place. I feel lighter and happier, less weighted down by the responsibility of caring for things. I highly recommend this new diet!

Years ago, I moved with my 2 younger children from a 3 bedroom house with basement, garage and 3 sheds to a 1 bedroom apartment. I kept only what I needed and a few things dear to my heart. I kept it simple, clutter free and it was wonderful!
Now that my children are older they have collected lots of things. We will be moving in the near future and I am looking forward to getting back to the basics once again. Free and easy! Good for you Ellie! More space for creativity!

    I love what you wrote.

For me, that weight of memories also applies to places I used to go for vacations. I didn’t know any better but kept going to the same family camp where I went as a little girl. Now, I appreciate that I can go anywhere I want and make new memories.
