First Morning in Santa Fe

Ellie's phone pictures 026When I woke up this morning it was dark. The bathroom was cold. I noticed that my casita doesn’t have a full-length mirror. Right now that feels like a good thing. I’m still getting my bearings. Waiting for the sun to rise, I checked email and wrote a blog. An intense light started shining in through the window. Ahhhhh…morning has arrived.

Venturing out into the light for the first time, I walked across the street to a coffee shop. Warm and cozy, the Downtown Subscription is a gathering place for locals to chat, work on their computers and greet the day while listening to 60’s music. When I walked in, everyone looked up. Obviously a newcomer giving off “I just got off the plane” energy. I talked with people on either side of me, taking advantage of their friendliness, easing my feelings of being out of place.

A note on the cash register said: Anyone trying to order while operating a cell phone will be ignored. I love it!

A lady walked in who was about 80 years old, wearing an orange and green flowy skirt, cowboy boots, silky, white hat and visor and a jacket with the old NBC peacock on the back. What a character! It seems like all styles are welcome here.

I’m still cold. When does it warm up?

On my walk to explore town, I found a chocolate shop that specializes in hot chocolate. Nirvana! A dream come true. I tested hot chocolates from all over the world and settled on a brownie with cacao nibs and chili. An old Aztec recipe of hot, bitter chocolate, chili, and 24 herbs and spices was a concoction that they gave their warriors before going off to war. It was nasty! If I drank a cup of that, I would want to go to war, too.

More tomorrow. I love to hear your comments.

I feel like I am in Santa Fe with you, exploring, walking, observing. I remember learning about chocolate and the Aztecs in school. Your story brings this to life once again and also made me laugh. Reminds me of sometimes when I nibble on that 90% chocolate bar. I look forward to reading more.
