Cops and Swimming Lessons

I was driving and listening to my mother tell me a story over the hands-free phone when I saw the flashing lights behind me.

“Mom!  Mom!  Mom!” my voice escalated to interrupt her story. “I’m being pulled over. I’ll call you back.”

I parked on the side of the road and heard a resonant voice over the loud speaker, “Pull into the parking space in the lot.” Boy, that loud speaker was LOUD!

The cop got out of his car and slowly walked to my door.

“My name is Officer Ramirez.”

“Hi, Officer, I’m Ellie.”

“I pulled you over because you were driving fast. You were going 40 in a zone of 25.”

“Wow! I didn’t know that,” I said. “Thanks for letting me know.”

“Yes,” he said as he looked over my license. “It is a slow speed zone on that road. Where are you going?”

“I’m going swimming at the Community Center. It’s a great pool. You should go sometime.”

“I can’t swim. To tell you the truth, I can’t even float. If I stopped swimming I’d sink to the bottom.”

“You could take lessons there. And they just got a new filtration system so it uses less chlorine. It’s really clean,” I offered.

“I’ll think about that,” as he handed my license back to me. “Be careful when driving.”

“I will, and I’ll be more cautious on this road, “I said.

“When you pull out of this lot, go to the left. I don’t want you to scrape the bottom of your car going over the curb on the right side.”

“Thanks so much!”

“Have a good day,” he said.

“You have a good day, too,” I answered.

As he walked to his car, I said out of my window, “This is why I love Santa Fe!”

He called back, “I love Santa Fe, too!”

Please share with anyone who might need a chuckle!
