Believing That You Are All Right

FullSizeRender-57My friend recently had a loss in her family. She needed to talk about her feelings of disbelief, aloneness and floating. I listened as she released pent-up emotions, listened to her questions and concerns, listened until she was talked out.  Then I had two things to say.

First, you are now and will be all right. It might not feel that way, but trust that you are taken care of. The ground was pulled out from beneath you and everything seems strange and unfamiliar, but as you sort this out and find a new life you will be all right.

Second, whatever you feel is okay. Anger, grief, rage, exhaustion, guilt, happiness and relief are all feelings that will ebb and flow. Be fully human and allow yourself to feel whatever comes up. Not running from your feelings will help you to heal and find peace.  She breathed more easily and said that my words were like medicine for her.

I think that we need to be gentle with ourselves while we grow and allow all of our feelings to pass through us without judgement or criticism.  It has worked for me in so many situations and maybe it has worked (or will work) for you.

Your thoughts?
