Arriving with No Limits

IMG_3727Babysitting for my two young grandchildren and watching them jump into life with abandon have made me acutely aware that we come into this world with no limits. We have no innate brakes that control our physical and emotional expressions or modulate our dreams and expectations. Everything is possible; nothing fits into a box. Categories have no relevance and cause and effect are alien concepts.

Children are equally comfortable expressing love, anger, compassion and fear sometimes overlapping side-by-side. Their wants, needs and feelings take center stage under the intense heat of the spotlight with no compulsion to explain those extremes to us bewildered adults.  Are you sad or angry?  Both.  Neither.  Can’t remember.  It made sense in the moment, now it’s history.

We are born whole and unhindered, naturally wild and authentic.  A two-year-old will jump off a couch without regard for where he might land.  He has to be taught that he might crash into a table or fall onto a hardwood floor.  It’s up to good parents to civilize children without breaking their spirits, teach them rules and consequences while acknowledging the unique qualities that make them so special.  And they ARE special.
