Approaching the Closet

IMG_9104I survived the first two nights of cleaning out my closet spurred on by Marie Kondo of “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.”  As I held up each item, I asked “Am I ever going to wear this?”  Then I admitted that the question is supposed to be “Does this spark joy?”  Well, that is a different question.  At first I wondered if a little joy counted, then I became more ruthless.  It was startling how many things brought me no pleasure and were stained and worn anyway.  How come I never noticed that?  I should wear my glasses more often when opening the closet door.

Marie says that if you liked clothes in the store, but no longer wear them, you can say “Thank you for giving me joy when I bought you” or “Thank you for teaching me what doesn’t suit me,” and let them go.  Acknowledge their contribution with gratitude for fulfilling their role in your life.  “To truly cherish the things that are important to you, you must first discard those that have outlived their purpose.”

With four bags to give away and one for my daughter (although Marie discourages this because she says they never really suit the other person), I am on a roll!  The author assures us that we will still have things to wear after this process.  In all humility, I have included the before picture of my sock drawer.   Seriously?  Who does that?  Next post will have the after picture.

Love this! You’ve inspired me, Ellie! After this jam-packed weekend I will start. Now, which closet to start with…
