Some people are embarrassed about their accomplishments. When my friend wrote a book and I congratulated her she said, “The next one is going to be better.” And when I complimented my tennis partner on a great shot, she said, “I was just lucky.”
I have a different philosophy. When I finish a sculpture, I know that it is the best that I could do at the time. It is better than the year before and probably not as good as the one next year. But, if I only display my very best work, there will be only one piece to show and that will be the last one before I die – a culmination of skill, experience and talent. I believe that all of my work is valuable because of its place in my evolution of learning.
In researching quotes for my upcoming book, I came across this one by Bernard Meltzer that clearly describes my thoughts:
“Use those talents you have. You will make it. You will give joy to the world. Take this tip from nature: The woods would be a very silent place if no birds sang except those who sang best.”
We all have a song to sing. Enjoy and sing it!!!! I’d like to hear your song.
Perfect timing for me to read this. Thank you!
I’m so glad, Annina!
When you diminish the compliment or recognition, you not only do a disservice to yourself but you rob the joy from the other person who delighted in loving what you do.
A gracious Thank you is all that is needed!
